Why I created a different kind of assessment

Hello Reader,

Hope you're enjoying the summer! I hope you're enjoying the summer. As I write this, I'm spending a little time exploring Shanghai before returning to Vienna.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've written about how easy it is for people to spend years adapting to life without ever really understanding themselves.

That conviction is what led me to develop an Adult Neurodivergence Assessment at The Mind Institute.

It wasn't because I believed existing assessments were necessarily wrong. Many are excellent. Rather, I became increasingly aware of how difficult it can be to assess neurodivergence in intelligent, articulate adults who have spent years adapting to the world around them.

Autism, ADHD, anxiety, trauma, burnout and perfectionism can overlap in ways that are far from straightforward. In my experience, the real challenge isn't recognising individual traits. It's understanding how they fit together, and which explanation makes the best sense of the person's life.

Over the past 30 years, I've worked as a psychologist, psychotherapist, executive coach and researcher, completing my doctoral research in screen addiction before increasingly specialising in adult neurodivergence. Those experiences have shaped an approach that looks beyond symptoms to understand the whole person, rather than simply deciding whether someone does or doesn't meet diagnostic criteria.

The assessment I've developed reflects that philosophy. It is rigorous, evidence-informed and designed to provide people with something more valuable than a label: a deeper understanding of themselves and a clear foundation for moving forward.

If you're wondering whether an Adult Neurodivergence Assessment might be appropriate for you, or for someone close to you, I'd be delighted to tell you more.

Thank you for reading these reflections over the past few weeks. It's been a pleasure reconnecting, and I look forward to writing again soon.

Warmly,

Matt

Hello Reader, Last week I mentioned that one of the reasons I've become increasingly interested in neurodevelopmental assessment is that so many people spend years trying to understand themselves through the wrong lens. That thought has stayed with me. Over the years I've worked with literally thousands of people from very different backgrounds. Executives, entrepreneurs, parents, healthcare professionals, teachers, diplomats and students. Although their lives have often looked very different...
